BMW’s all-electric SUV gets updates with extended range

BMW has introduced an updated version of its iX electric SUV, incorporating enhancements in range, efficiency, and performance. The revised model lineup includes the iX xDrive45, iX xDrive60, and the high-performance iX M70 xDrive. These changes reflect advancements in BMW’s electric drive technology and a focus on efficiency improvements.

The most notable upgrade is the increase in range, with the iX xDrive60 now capable of reaching up to 701 kilometers (435 miles) on the WLTP cycle. This is due to refinements in power electronics, battery efficiency, and aerodynamics. The iX xDrive45 has also seen improvements, with its battery capacity increasing by 30 percent to 94.8 kWh, leading to a significant range boost. The iX M70 xDrive, the highest-performing model, continues to deliver top-tier acceleration and power output.

Performance upgrades apply across all variants. The iX xDrive45 now produces 408 horsepower, a 82-horsepower increase, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.1 seconds. The iX xDrive60 sees a modest power increase to 544 horsepower, reducing its acceleration time to 4.6 seconds. The iX M70 xDrive maintains its high-performance positioning with 659 horsepower and a 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) time of 3.8 seconds.

BMW has refined the exterior and interior design of the iX. The vehicle now features a revised grille, updated LED lighting, and an optional M Sport package for a more aggressive look. The range of available paint finishes has also been expanded. The interior includes newly designed M multifunction seats, upgraded trim options, and improved user interface elements through the BMW Operating System 8.5.

Charging capabilities have been enhanced, with the iX xDrive45 now supporting DC fast charging up to 175 kW, while the xDrive60 and M70 xDrive offer a peak rate of 195 kW. Additional updates include improved route planning for charging stops through BMW’s navigation system, as well as the availability of home charging solutions.

Production of the updated iX models will continue at BMW’s Dingolfing plant, which serves as the company’s hub for electric drivetrain production. The revised iX lineup will be available worldwide starting in spring 2025, with key markets including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany.
